1 in 4 Children Suffer ABUSE

Did you know that were over 700,000 reported cases of child abuse in 2014 (cdc.gov)? That means there are thousands of more cases that have not been reported. Abuse can be physical, emotional, or sexual. It is not always made apparent and often is kept a secret throughout the child’s life. Imagine carrying that type of burden in your mind for your eternal life. For some, it drives many children to do things that are harmful or unhealthy while neglecting needed mental health care.

We all play apart in the lives of children that live in our neighborhoods, play with our kids, or socialize in our community groups. Pay attention to signs that indicate something is wrong. If you ask a child if something is wrong, they will likely lie and tell you everything is fine. Be more specific when you are addressing an observable concern. For example, “Kate, I’ve noticed that you have not been coming your hair and you’re always wearing baggy clothes, is there something bothering you?” Direct observations helps someone talk more. Even if they lie, you’re likely to get more conversation from them so that you can build a conversation to ask more questions.
